HISTORY OF THE “CÓRDOBA LA VIEJA” STUD

Horses and mares have been galloping in Córdoba la Vieja’s meadows for many centuries. Back in the times of Abd al-Rahman I’s caliphate, the horses of Al Manzor’s stud did it, as part of the landscape of the city-palace of Madinat Al – Zahra.

In 1567, Felipe II set up its Royal Stud in Córdoba la Vieja, which thus became part, alongside some other estates and the “Caballerizas Reales” of Córdoba, of the king’s great project for the creation of the Spanish Horse.

The CÓRDOBA LA VIEJA country-house is located in the Córdoba - Palma del Río road, some 6.5 kms. from Córdoba, in the Sierra Morena foothills. It rests at the feet of historical monuments such as the San Jerónimo monastery and the Madinat Al - Zahra palace, which is nowadays undergoing reconstruction and, not long ago, was included within the limits of Córdoba La Vieja.

The estate used to be owned by the first caliph of bullfighting, Rafael Molina “Lagartijo”, who set up its wild bulls livestock in it. It was subsequently owned by Mr. Florentino Sotomayor, breeder of anglo – arabian horses, who merged those of his stud with those of the renowned stud of the Marqués de los Castellones.

The great Antonio Cañero also spent long periods at the country house, where he used to keep his horses for most of his time as mounted bullfighter. He would then have his horses trained and tamed in the meadows of the estate, as also did frequently the other bullfighting caliph, the great Manuel Rodriguez Sanchez "Manolete", who trained and fought heifers in the bull ring existing in the country house.

In the stately house you can find, duly kept, memories of such an impressive history.

Thus, Córdoba la Vieja is one of the estates with a greater equestrian and bullfighting-related tradition of the history of Córdoba.

In 1938, Mr. Rafael Eraso Betelú acquired the estate for his children; Lola, Kety and Rafael, which estate was subsequently inherited by its current owners, Francisco, Enrique, Mª Dolores, Rafael and Juan San Miguel Eraso.

The line of anglo arabian horses that nowadays make up the stud starts with the mare CUCA, pure Arab breed from the “Yeguada Militar”, which was acquired for the family by Mr. Francisco San Miguel.

Currently, and after more than 60 years dedicated to the breeding and promotion of the dreamt horse......... THE ANGLO-ARABIAN: AGILE, BEAUTIFUL, POWERFUL, STRONG AND FAST, the CÓRDOBA LA VIEJA STUD, with a patient blending of bloods, appropriate feeding and good training, has achieved a great prestige for its products in the sports and leisure horse market.
